So, English 102 is finally done. I don't know how confident I am on my portfolio, but that is the most stressed I have been in a while. It seemed like this course did go by fast, but I'm glad it is done with. I somewhat liked all the new activities we did like this blogger for example, recasts, and discussion boards. It added a creative side to a potentially really boring class. I also feel like I became a better
writer which was the goal of the class. Thank you everyone. Bye Cincy

World Ending
Thankfully, the world didn't end this weekend, however this weather has been insane. I turn on the news all I see are tsunami's, earthquakes, tornadoes, volcanoes. What is going on!?

Osama Bin Laden's Death
My response isn't going to go that in depth on the death of Osama Bin Laden due to the fact that it has been talked about nonstop on the news and by people ever since it has happened. I will say that the feeling I felt that night when they announced his death was something I haven't felt in a while maybe even ever. It was incredible to know that the man responsible for 9/11 was taken out finally. Nothing can take back 9/11, but this definitely unites and picks the spirits up of American citizens. I am concerned with what is next though. The leader may be dead, but the Taliban live on. Will it enrage and unite them for future terrorist attacks. I hope not. To me it's a start for more positive things to come.
Stepping aside from what we could talk about for days in world politics, and terrorism and everything else, since we are doing this for English class I wanted to talk about Obama's speeches. After every time of listening to an Obama speech he leaves me impressed. Now he currently makes me wonder how involved he is in writing his own speeches. I did some research and found he has a speech writing team led by Jon Favreau, who is only 23 years old. Imagine how much pressure must be on him. Writing a speech for the President of the United States, that millions would be listening to, acting on, and criticizing. Not only that they must give the speech a language and mood that fits the president himself. For that I give them credit along with the president.

USA
Obama's speech said it perfectly. I'm so proud of this country and the soldiers that give their life fighting for us. Osama's death brought joy and unity to this country through the rough times we have been experiencing recently. 9-11 will never be forgotten and hopefully nothing like that ever happens again. God bless the USA.
Lit Review
The salary of professional sports athletes is now higher then it has ever been. As salaries become higher it only becomes more talked about and arguably more of a problem. The cause of this is debatable, but solutions to this topic are crucial. The main argument people have is how athletes are being paid more then occupations that actually are important and beneficial to society; for example, a teacher, fireman, even some doctors. The money could be used millions of other ways that would be helpful to society. Results of all these arguments can be categorized in the categories of economics and morals. Is it right for people playing a game they are good at get paid millions of dollars?
Some say the consumers have brought this dilemma on themselves. According to Gene Callahan (2007) That’s because in a market economy the price paid for any factor of production (including labor services) arises from the choices consumers make about the items they wish to buy and how much they are willing to pay. Is it wrong when players demand to be paid more money because they feel it’s what they are truly worth or is it the American fans that have caused professional sports to be as importance and influential as they are in society? Ryan Morrison
(1993), stated they decry the effect money has on professional athletes, claiming that, It corrupts. It distorts. It seduces and they long for the good old days when players were paid amounts commensurate with their talent (which, of course, is now unimaginable). The dependance on professional sports is so high owners can increase prices on tickets and everything so much and know that people will continue to purchase and support their team because how high the demand is. This is something that has been going on for some time now, it can even go all the way back to professional baseball and Babe Ruth. Without a doubt Babe Ruth was a very impressive athlete, as he became one of the most famous baseball players of all time; His earnings proved it. In Nick Acocella’s article (2010), he was the first professional baseball player to get $50,000 per year, receiving that amount starting in 1922. Ruth’s salary ballooned from $600 in his first professional season in Baltimore to $10,000 with Boston in 1919 to $80,000 with New York in 1930. It is common for a persons salary to increase year by year as the cost of living increases and as they gain experience in their area of work, but there has to be a line drawn somewhere when it comes to professional sports.
There can also be a strong argument for athletes being paid as well as they do. Since athletes are rare in supply, they command a higher price. Professional athletes also become icons of the sport, and a lot of people benefit economically by having them. In an article by Steven Resnick (2009) it explains not only that, athletes are always working by training to get better, traveling, which means being away from their family, and risking serious injury every time they play that could end their career. Athletes must possess the physical and psychological endurance necessary to offer world-class athletic ability. They willingly sacrifice all personal privacy and the amount of time they put into physical training, it's only fair for them to earn what they properly deserve. Like any other working American, professional athletes deserve every penny they receive. Considering the filthy amount of money spent on merchandise, TV contracts and tickets, the athletes deserve to reap the benefits they work for, stated by Mike Honcho’s publication (2010). Many people may feel athletes are paid insane amounts of money for playing a game, but taking a closer look at what being a pro athlete entails and the benefits it produces, that people don’t realize, make it seem very possible that professional athletes deserve everything they are paid.

So Far....
So, This is my first blog post on my own, to pretty much explain how I'm feeling right now about this paper and life in general. So far it has been a rocky start and I already have made mistakes I wish I could change. I could have spent more time and learned the formats better to receive a better grade on the proposal and annotation, but there is definitely revisions I will need to make. Other than that this whole thing is scary to me, no homo. English is by far not my strong subject and I just struggle with what to write. I know it will be hard, but that's life. I'm just stressing right now about my grades and other classes as well, so there is my life.

Proposal
Kyle Long
English Proposal
In 2010 Tiger Woods Made made over $90 millions, LeBron James made over $45 million, and Alex Rodriguez made over $35 millions. You aren’t alone if you question how this can be possible and how fair this is. Professional athletes being overpaid is a major problem that effects nearly everyone. The major argument is that professional athletes get paid way to much to play a game while they are making millions more then people that actually work hard and have real jobs. The concept is that anyone else would play these things for free, while these people are making multimillion dollars to do it. Another reason this became such an issue is people realized that some of these athletes are being paid more the people with jobs that actually benefit the society, like doctors or surgeons, that save lives. This could have been caused by many things, but one specific cause is society and the people who support the athletic events and the teams. A reasonable explanation to why they get paid so much can be simply related to the idea of supply and demand. The demand of gas increasing leads to gas prices increasing. The demand of professional sports leads to ticket prices and athletes salaries increasing. They became so popular because so many people watch them and are entertained by them; I honestly don’t know what the world would be like if professional sports didn’t exist. Personally I enjoy watching sports and agree they are entertaining, but also agree that the athletes are being overpaid. This problem is only going to get worse with time and if it doesn’t get solved it can lead to even more controversy and economical problems.
Solving this problem would be nearly impossible. The obvious way to solve it would be to lower the athletes salaries, but it’s not that easy. Athletes would not agree to that and most argue that they should be paid more. Another reason it would be hard to solve is because that would mean all the fans would have to stop supporting the sports teams and athletes they love. Some other possible solutions would be to have an actually effective and reasonable salary cap or system that pays players based on performance.
Professional athletes excessive salary is a problem that needs handled or will get out of control. We need to change. Really it’s really in the hands of society, who partially caused the problem in the first place. There has to be a solution, not everyone may like it, but if it benefits society it should be done.
Thesis: While Professional athletes are paid significantly for their talents, they contribute little to making society better. Money spent on pro athletes could be better spent somewhere else.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tAp9BKosZXs -Friday, Rebecca Black

Essay Topics
So, I'm still not quite sure about what I'm going to write about so hopefully you guys can help me out.
My first option is to write about the effects of sports in childhood. I'd like to write about this because its something I am passionate about and would like to do more research on. It could also be useful in the future.
My second option is the argument of pro athletes being overpaid. I chose this because I find it to be an interesting topic I could write a lot about. I'd like to hear both sides of the argument and decide if I still feel the same way.
My last option is the argument of genetic engineering. I have always been interesting in the science field and this is a very controversial topic. I just want to find out more about it and why people are for and against in and take a side I feel is right.
Thanks, Kyle
